They are running a series of ads to make smokers feel bad because of the results of the smoke in their lungs. The ads feature people with breathing problems wheezing and having a very difficult time. My problem with the ads is that they repeatedly play them at dinnertime. What are those of us who smoked 30 years ago and quit, supposed to do? We have reached a point in our lives where we do not need to have our mealtime disrupted by these gruesome images.
I have started to turn off the volume for these ads and keep it off for the duration of the commercial break. I cannot boycott the ad, but I can boycott the advertisers in the rest of the break. Maybe if we do that some of the advertisers will speak up and that will at least get those ads placed in a better place.
I know that they are trying hard to get people to quit. The truth is that the timing of the ads will not reach the group that needs it the most. They do need to reach out to the younger people, who do not watch the news on TV any more. Put the ads on the cable channels that the younger viewers watch or maybe late night when they will be awake and smoking.
I do want people to stop smoking and causing our insurance rates to go up. It is a very complex situation. The taxes on smoking material help with the costs of hospitals and some of the money goes to the education of young children. It probably would save money if we did not have to pay for the costs of medical care for those who are smokers. It would also save money for those who must live with smokers and even save money that the mess smoke leaves behind.
Let’s just say STOP SMOKING AND SAVE US ALL MONEY.
