I may be a little late with the comment, but it finally has gotten through to me. What? The joke that is that has been foisted upon all of us is the Walt Disney Concert Hall. It was opened on October 24, 2003 and I have hated it since I saw the first drawings, although I could not figure out why I disliked the building so much.
Looking at the outside of the building and hearing all about the greatness of the design I thought that I alone disliked the design. I have tried to figure out why the design irritates me. I have been inside of the structure and it is like a different world on the inside. Once you go into the structure the outside is forgotten and you can enjoy a facility that does what it was built to do. The auditorium is acoustically pleasing and the site lines do give the audience the chance to enjoy the programs. BUT ----
Now I know what happened to the outside of the building. It is a joke on the world. Frank Gehry scribbled the joke on a napkin and the world took him seriously. It is in fact just a junk pile lying on the side of the road. The design probably was never intended for actual construction. It is not just unpleasant but it looks dangerous to the people and buildings in its vicinity. People have complained about the reflective nature of the building. I think that on a day that reaches over 100°it could be very unpleasant to walk near the building. I do not exaggerate when I give that temperature since it is very possible for downtown Los Angeles to reach over 100° on any day during the summer and for that matter any day of the year. The actual mess of a building just doesn’t do us any favors.
When you read about the design of buildings you find that there are two schools of thought. One says just design a building that you like and no matter how it looks in an area it will be accepted as art. The other is to look at the surroundings and build something that actually becomes a part of the surroundings. It is the same as when you build on a mountain top. Do you build a space ship and let it stand out or do you build something that looks natural and blends into the surroundings?
The Disney not only does not blend into the area, it makes the area look like it is a major junk yard that was ignored and then other buildings were built around it.
So the emperor has no clothes and the joke is on us.
