My bucket list is now shorter by a couple of items. The movie of that title did give me the idea to write out a list and I will do it someday. I know that means that the list must start with the list. On a recent trip to the east a couple of items that would be on the list were accomplished and so they do not need to go on the list. If I keep this up maybe I will not need a list? I take no credit for the itinerary that my wife set up I just enjoyed most of the stops. These ramblings are in no particular order, just as I think of them and not as visited.
1. Falling Water: I love the outside design of Frank Lloyd Wright’s great house, and the location is so relaxing that you are instantly put into a peaceful state – but you could not live in the house very long. It seems that it is not real. It is just not livable and I think that is why it was only designed as a getaway from the real world.

2. Three Rivers: It was interesting to see the confluence of two major rivers making a third and to do it in the center of a major city, made it even more interesting.
3. Pittsburg: A major city that seems to have been ignored for a long time. You can see the old part of the city and the departure of the steel industry and that type of work. Of course seeing the pickle and ketchup king, made up for some of that. The movie industry seems to have found this city and two major films were in production while we visited.
4. Altoona Horseshoe Curve: One of the points on the radar of train watchers that attracts attention, because of the steepness of the turn. It also highlights how our nations rail system needs to be upgraded to eliminate some of these spots. This would increase the speed these trains can travel, which will help to attract riders.
5. Memorial Day Concert: Mentioned in a previous post, it is one more time when seeing an event in person is better than on TV. On another time, I hope to see the Fourth of July show on the Nation’s Mall.
6. Newseum: A very well done view of the news world, with an emphasis on the more current events. The 9/11 tragedy shows some very personnel accounts of people who were involved, including the members of the press and the TV engineers that died at the top of the World Trade Center.
7. Arlington Cemetery: Seeing the cemetery when the flags have been placed to honor the men and women who will spend eternity there, is must see. It also brings out the fact that these brave men and women should be honored every day of the year.
This list only includes some of the highlights of a very recent trip east. Every time that you travel you should try to hit a few of the places that would be on your list, even if you do not know you would have included them because you did not know that yet. So your list may not get any shorter, but then again it will not get any longer. Just remember have fun and work on the list.

The wife involved with the set up of this trip, didn't have much of a clue, either. Pittsburgh and DC were not planned stops. The only thing planned at all, was to take the rest of the train trip across the Country. Remember that last year we did the LA to Chicago leg of the trip. So when I put Chicago to NY into AMTRAK, the site gave me another option and that is where Pittsburgh and DC came in. It worked out great for us and what made it even better was that it was totally serendipitous. The BEST kind of thing.
