And They Really Mean It!

I have thought about this for years and must comment on the fact that not all road signs are meant to be taken with the same seriousness. Just think about all of the speed limit signs that you have seen in the last year. Not all of them have the same meaning. Some are there to let you know how fast that you can drive and not get a ticket. Others are to show that it is an area where an activity is taking place and that you should be careful to watch out for the dumb people who will be walking around in the road.

The most important speed sign that you will see is the one that tells you to slow down for a curve. Most of them are just a guess and indicate that you should be careful because you are entering into a transition and should be careful on the way in and then speed up to merge with the traffic on the new road. Some are an actual indicator of the speed that you need to use in a very tight corner. Those are the ones that need an additional warning. They should have a sign that gives the speed and has an additional warning sign that says: “AND WE REALLY MEAN IT”. This would tell drives that have not been in that area previously that they have reached a spot where it will be in their own best interest to slow down not just to prevent getting a ticket but to prevent them from having an accident. Most of the time it will take a driver several trips through that area before they really do believe what sign has to say. The reason for that is that we do not think that they do really mean the speed and if they did tell us that this was one of the times that they were putting up the sign for a reason and not just to make some people slow down and tie up traffic. It seems that in some cases they want one car to slow down so that all traffic is slower when entering another road and that way they do not have to put in the traffic lights that people hate on ramps.
It seems that all of us do want to obey the law. It just seems that in some places and at some times, we do not see the law in the same way that they have presented it to us. Location is important and we should all obey the law all of the time. It is that sometimes we just want to be our own person and not need to do what others want, at that moment. Just remember that, above all, be careful all the time. Not just when you are driving, but when you are the person walking in the road.
