It was fun to go to the Ambassador Auditorium to see the Pasadena Symphony and Anne Akiko Meyers perform. I think that some reviews will be lax in covering the event. I understood that the two performances on Saturday were very different in both technical and artistic merit. In the afternoon the staff had an opportunity to get the feel of the room with a partial audience. The fuller house in the evening made for a different acoustic sound. This is a new organization using the facility and it will take them a couple of concerts to find the voice of the house. It may be an old orchestra, but being they are in a new home, they will need time to adjust. Even the staff needs to learn the basics of the new home. The ushers still did not know where the seats were located. The chance of the performers to play together an additional time, gave the final show more depth.
The room itself has many benefits. I noticed that some of the lighting may have been set for the church services that are held each Sunday. You must remember that the venue is owned by a church. Good! It allows for multi-use.
It could be set up for any religion and give a new congregation a chance to have more people present. I can even envision a very orthodox Jewish congregation using the facility because of the configuration. It reminds me of a shul that I visited in Brooklyn, NY were the men prayed on the main floor and the women gossiped in the balcony. All of this would lead to a stable situation for the congregation which supports this great auditorium. I had heard about the greatness of this auditorium and I agree completely that it has a great sound and is just the right size for seeing and hearing a performance. So I for one, plan on keeping up with who is performing at the Ambassador and hope I will be attending again someday.
