I Recently I have come across several situations that seem to show that we may not mean what we say or is it that we are too lazy to change those things that no longer fit the situation. If you have been on any US airline in recent years you have heard the flight attendants or a prerecorded message with the preflight instructions. Besides the use of the seatbelts and where the emergency exits are located comes the obligatory no smoking message. They always include the message that no smoking is allowed in the restrooms and that damaging a smoke detector is a federal crime. I do agree with the no smoking policy and even think that it should apply to everyone even dignitaries from other Countries. That is not what I am questioning at this time. I was on a trip last month and noticed on two different types of aircraft that both had working ashtrays in the restroom. I would think that the airline would have placed something more useful in its place. It just doesn’t make sense. Next is the restroom at a local company that still had an ashtray in place. I know that this company may not have wanted to spend the money to take that item off of the wall. They may want to save a little money – they may not have noticed or maybe they think that the state law that forbids smoking inside of buildings in all of the state will change. Both seem to be lazy and cheap actions that give the public a mixed signal as to their willingness to enforce the law.
Speaking of how we look at the law, you should think about the primary election coming soon to this state. We have a history of paid placement of propositions on the ballet. Organizations pay to have signatures collected and place issues before the public, a public that is not aware of the source of the measure. This election we have one that is paid for by a private utility and another that comes from an insurance company. You can sense where these measures are directed. One measures paid advertising, advises voters to only believe the state election pamphlet. But if you look carefully, the quote that they say is the unbiased truth, is actually a quote from the pro argument written by the people who put the issue on the ballet. That is just another thing that somehow doesn’t seem to balance out. I know that we must always make our own decisions and that we can not believe everything we see, especially before an election, but I do think that we should try to see that we do not deceive people and that we try to keep up with the times that exist now.
