I have taken one more trip to the East Coast and I find that my thinking about the East Coast has not changed much over the years. Some things seem to be the same whenever I travel to the East. No matter what time of year some things seem to be the same.
I have always found that people are the same and I will not include that in my discussion. Good people are all over and the bad ones are few and equally spread out. Most of the bad experiences are caused by people who are stressed on the job and that is usually caused by a situation where they have no control.
But let us get started on the things that I have considered.
1. The sun rises in the East and that is cold and at such an early hour. The sun setting over the ocean on the West Coast is warmer and friendlier. Just think about the possibilities of a nice glass of wine while watching the sun slowly sink in the west. Think of the pleasant beaches that are available most of the year.
2. Who wants to hide inside in the summer when one of those thunder storms hits and you must not only protect yourself from rain but from hail and the possibility of lightning. It seems that all that these storms seem to do is to increase the humidity and make our life more miserable.
3. Compare summer in New York and in San Francisco.
a. New York hot humid and muggy most of the summer with only a few days that are pleasant. Include the above mentioned rain storms and you have even more of a muggy mess.
b. San Francisco actually has a cool season in the summer and it is hard to think that the fog makes the city softer and the sounds from the fog horns making the early mornings more soulful and less hectic feeling. I have come to the city from 100 degree weather and found it in the mid 60’s. It can be quite a shock but in a very pleasant way. From shorts and t-shirt to a jacket and long pants all in one day. The winters do have rain and that can be as dangerous on the hills as the snow in New York City. I do know that New York City does not get as much snow as some other cities that are inland but that does not change the fact that snow is cold and tends to look so dirty after a couple of days.
4. Shrimp is better then lobster. Besides how often can you spend $50.00 for a lobster dinner for two? Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey or in San Francisco are both places filled with tourists and yet a place were you Can get a great meal and have a fun time. Manhattan may be filled with fun places to eat but I have had better food in the West.
5. Let us list some of the better food and where you can get it.
a. Bagels are better on the West Coast. Most places that now make bagels are just making imitations and the true form does not include raisins or cinnamon. Some people will laugh when I say that the plain bagel is the only true form but that is true despite the fact that I eat mostly the onion form. I do understand that some things develop to sell more products I just do not need to purchase these imitations.
b. The New York pizza is over rated and places in Chicago and Los Angeles do make a great pie.
c. No matter how many times I have tried Chinese food in the East it is better in the West and the only place where I have had great egg foo yung was in Sherman Oaks California and it is not around any more.
d. All beer is not the same and the majority of brands in the East do not compare to the better brands in the West. Sam Adams may be the only exception but if I have to choose I think that Olympia is the best and it does have the best looking brewery.
e. Wine in the Napa valley has always be the choice of most of the world and Long Island and the Hudson Valley will always be also runs.
f. Corned beef well I must admit that the best does come from Chicago and that few places on either coast can compare. Langer's in Los Angeles makes about the best sandwiches in the Country and the East Coast has gone way down hill. I must include my mother’s secret: when you order a pound of corned beef always get in cold so that you do no pay for all of the water that is still in the brisket when it is hot. Cold corned beef is corned beef warm is just a slice of brisket. The Irish do make a good brisket but a deli that makes in themselves and does it right does so much more for a sandwich. It is truly a crime to put catsup on such a sandwich and it should be eaten plain or with mustard to have the true experience.
g. Then there is Bob’s Big Boy were you Can get the combo with the sauce that made it famous only on the West Coast and the staff actually know that it can be ordered with avocado slices on it. In the East it comes with no flavor and despite the picture in the menu the waitress has no idea what you are talking about if you ask for avocado. They may not longer be in Glendale, CA but they are coming back.
You should have gotten my point by now you can see that I justified in my belief that West wins but I will continue to travel to the East in hope that I will find a difference.
